India on lips, Pak PM plays peace card in Lanka | India News – Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan PM Imran Khan frequently referred to India during his two-day visit to Sri Lanka, projecting himself as someone who had always advocated dialogue as the way forward for the two neighbours even as New Delhi took two steps back.
Addressing the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Conference in Colombo on Wednesday, Khan said one of his first tasks after assuming office was to “explain” to PM Narendra Modi the need to resolve all differences through dialogue for the sake of peace and prosperity in the subcontinent.
“I didn’t succeed, but I am optimistic that eventually common sense will prevail. The only way the subcontinent can tackle poverty is by improving trade relations. Let us live like civilised neighbours, just as the Europeans live,” he said.
“Germany and France have fought multiple times, but today it is unthinkable for them to have a conflict because they are so interlinked due to trade. Similarly, my dream for the subcontinent is that we resolve our differences,” he said, adding that the Kashmir issue was the only reason for conflict in the region.
Apprehensions about Khan raking up the Kashmir issue had reportedly led Colombo to cancel his planned address to the Sri Lankan parliament. Some within the Sri Lankan government fear that allowing Khan to speak to parliamentarians against Delhi’s policies of Delhi could harm the island country’s ties with India.
“All we want is for the Kashmir dispute to be resolved according to the United Nations Security Council‘s resolutions, and this can only be achieved through dialogue,” Khan said at the trade and investment conference.
He also expressed hope that Pakistan could play its part in reducing rising tensions between the US and China. “We would much rather be a country that brings other nations and humanity together,” he said.
At the end of his address, Khan urged the Sri Lankan business community to participate in the over $60b-China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project. “It gives you the opportunity of connecting from Gwadar right up to Uzbekistan and the central Asian states,” he said. “This is the connectivity that Pakistan offers.”

Officials asked to collate action taken on issues raised by PM in his I-Day, Mann ki Baat speeches | India News – Times of India

0

NEW DELHI: Officers across several ministries have got a fresh task to go through all the Independence Day speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014 and note down his mentions about the respective department or issues relating to particular entities. They have been asked to prepare actions taken on those issues.
Some ministries have even issued directions to different departments to go through all Mann Ki Baat – the monthly radio address – the PM has had since 2014 and list the references he has made to issues relating to the particular departments. In this case also, they have been asked to prepare the details of actions taken so far on such issues.
“There has been strict monitoring across the ministries and departments. Since the PM’s addresses to the nation from Red Fort or in Mann ki Baat are assurances to the people, it is felt that every department must take necessary steps. Monitoring of all issues and development have been the hallmark of this government,” said an official.
He added that every secretary of each department receives the full audio recording and also the verbatim script of Man ki Baat a day after it’s broadcast and hence none can give any excuse for not going through them.

India vs England: Ball was skidding, so plan was to bowl wicket to wicket, says Axar Patel | Cricket News – Times of India

0

AHMEDABAD: India left-arm spinner Axar Patel on Wednesday said his plan to bowl wicket-to-wicket on a “skidding” Motera surface reaped rich dividends for him on the opening day of the day-night third Test against England here.
Patel and senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin exploited the turning Motera pitch at the newly-inaugurated Narendra Modi stadium to the full to bundle out England for 112 in their first innings in just 48.4 overs after the visitors opted to bat.

Patel (21.4-6-38-6) grabbed his second five-for in his second Test while Ashwin (16-6-26-3) took three.
“When things are going for you, you need to capitalise. My aim was to bowl wicket to wicket and use the help on offer. In Chennai, the ball wasn’t skidding. But here it was skidding which resulted in more LBW decisions,” Axar said at the press conference after the day’s play.
“The pink ball had more glare, so it was skidding more after pitching. I got more skid on this wicket than Chennai.”

Axar said he was confident of doing well here after his performance in the second Test in Chennai, where he picked up a five-wicket haul in his debut.
“I didn’t expect to pick six wickets on the opening day but obviously, I was confident after picking up five wickets in Chennai,” he said.
“The Chennai performance gave me confidence that I can do well with the pink ball and if the wickets support, I can put the batsmen under difficulty.”

He revealed that contrary to expectations, the ball was not turning much and that’s why he and Ashwin concentrated on bowling at the stumps.
Axar said as the ball was skidding more, he focussed on under-cutting his deliveries.
“The wicket was skidding so I was focussing more on under-cutting the ball. I tried to bowl a lot faster so that I can take more advantage with the new ball,” he said.

MP CM rules out lockdown, says labourers to get MGNREGA works | India News – Times of India

0

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday ruled out a fresh lockdown and urged labourers to avoid going out of the state in search of work in view of the rising coronavirus cases in parts of the country.
A clutch of states, including Maharashtra, has witnessed a spike in new Covid-19 in recent days. Madhya Pradesh, too, has been recording smaller spikes in daily infections in the last 10 days.
Chouhan, speaking at a meeting called to review the coronavirus situation in the state, said labourers will be absorbed in MGNREGA works.
“Labourers in border areas should not seek work in neighbouring states. They will be provided employment in their villages under MGNREGA.
“(A fresh) lockdown will not be imposed so that economic activities do not get adversely affected in the state,” Chouhan said at the meeting.
The CM directed the administration to provide work in villages to labourers from the border districts of Balaghat, Seoni and Betul, among others, who go to Maharashtra in search of livelihood avenues.
The meeting was informed that upcoming fairs in Pachmarhi, Betul, Chhindwara, Barwani and the districts bordering Maharashtra have been postponed due to the rising Covid-19 cases.
Chouhan emphasised on screening of people coming to Madhya Pradesh from Maharashtra.
He said all norms related to coronavirus prevention, including physical distancing and wearing masks, should be strictly followed.
Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday reported 344 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally of infections to 2,60,313, health officials said.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s first rally in Kolkata cancelled as police ‘deny’ permission | India News – Times of India

0

KOLKATA: AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi’s first rally in Kolkata, scheduled to be held on Thursday, has been cancelled as the city police denied permission for it, party sources claimed.
Owaisi was scheduled to kick off his party’s campaign ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections with the rally in the minority-dominated Metiabruz area of the city.
AIMIM state secretary Zameerul Hasan said the police did not give them permission for the rally.
“We had applied 10 days back for permission. But today we were informed by the police that they will not permit us to hold the rally. We can’t be cowed down by such tactics of the ruling TMC. We will discuss and soon announce a fresh date for a programme,” Hasan said.
AIMIM has already come up with posters for the planned programme.
The Kolkata police declined to comment on the matter.
The TMC denied any involvement in the cancellation of the rally.
“We have no role in permitting a rally organised by the AIMIM which is nothing but a proxy of the BJP in Bengal,” TMC MP Sougata Roy said.
Parties in West Bengal are apprehensive that political equations in the polarised state are set to witness significant changes as the sway of the non-BJP outfits over minorities appears to be set for a stiff challenge with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen entry, prominent Muslim leaders in the state claimed.
Owaisi, who after AIMIM’s good performance in the 2020 Bihar assembly poll has announced that it will contest the Bengal election, has been discussing a possible alliance with Furfura Sharif cleric Abbas Siddiqui, who had recently floated the Indian Secular Front (ISF).
According to a senior leader of the Hyderabad-based party, Owaisi has seen in West Bengal, a fertile ground for his expansion plans, as Muslims constitute around 30 per cent of the state’s population.
Elections to the 294-member West Bengal Assembly are likely to be held in April-May.

Trust in almighty and self-confidence has kept them going in corona times | India News – Times of India

0

DAOKE (AMRITSAR ): Surrounded on three sides by Pakistan, the residents of Daoke village are braving with the coronavirus pandemic with almost nil transport and erratic mobile connectivity even as a single bridge that connects the village with the main road is lying in shambles with railing on one side of the bridge is completely missing.
While talking to TOI on Wednesday, Harneet Singh, officiating principal of Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Daoke, informed that Amritsar was nearly 46 kilometres from Daoke and there was no government or private bus connectivity and it becomes a daunting task to shift a patient to Amritsar in case of a medical emergency.
“People are dependent on each other for travelling to Amritsar or they have to travel to the nearest bus stop at Rajatal which is four kilometres away but the bus service is not available at night, you can guess how helpless one feels but people are brave,” said laboratory attendant of the school Paramjit Singh.
Amrik Singh, a local resident said that during the coronavirus it had become more important to have better connectivity with the best hospitals in Amritsar which, he said, was not possible unless one arrange their own vehicle. ”Besides transport, the mobile connectivity is also very poor which is the need of the hour, only BSNL has good connectivity here,” he said adding that people were largely dependent on ‘Waheguru and their inner strength to tackle the pandemic.
“Sometimes back one of my relatives was showing symptoms like that of coronavirus and I had to take him to a hospital in Amritsar, I had no option but to request another person who owns the car to drop us at the hospital and above all there was no mobile connectivity until we reached near Attari,” he said.
While pointing towards a lone bridge that connects the village with the rest of India, septuagenarian Parkash Kaur said “We, the womenfolk are worried a lot about the security of our children and husbands who have to often cross the bridge which doesn’t have a railing on one side” adding that even the Border Security Force and army vehicles cross from the same bridge yet nobody has shown concern to broaden the bridge or at least get the new railing fixed on it.
Notably in 2016 seven school children were killed and several were injured after their school bus fell into a drain in Mahawa near Daoke village.
“The villagers have spent over Rs 60 lakh in the construction of Gurdwara we can also spend money for the repair of the bridge but the defence department has raised some objections, “ said a local resident Nirvail Singh adding that they had decided to boycott the politicians who had been making false promises during the poll time.
“There is coronavirus outbreak and one requires emergency services but the politicians are just careless about us, “ he said.
Harneet said despite odds they had kept the school opened as per the government‘s recommendations.
“After lockdown parents were reluctant to send their children to school, our teachers went house to house and persuaded parents to send their children and we are also serving them with midday meal,” he said.

ISL: Mumbai City rout Odisha 6-1 to keep ACL hopes alive | Football News – Times of India

0

In a do-or-die situation, Mumbai City FC brought out their best possible play in recent times to inflict the heaviest loss of the season on Odisha FC and thereby keeping their hopes alive for making it to the Asian Champions League (ACL).
The Islanders took the field determined and a dominant display saw them winning the game 6-1 at GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Wednesday.
Bipin Singh scored the first hat-trick (38’, 47’ 86’) of the 2020-21 season of Indian Super League (ISL), Bartholomew Ogbeche (13’, 43’) got a double while Cy Goddard (44’) netted the most beautiful of the goals on the night for Mumbai City.
Interestingly, Odisha opened the scoring through a penalty in the ninth minute. Following a foul on Jerry Mawihmingthanga by midfielder Ahmed Jahouh, Brazilian Diego Mauricio was lucky enough to convert from the spot with a weak, straight strike which hit Mumbai goalkeeper Amrinder Singh’s arm before going in.
With this thumping victory Mumbai reached 37 points from 19 matches and will have their task cut out when they take on league leaders and defending champions ATK Mohun Bagan in the last league encounter on Sunday. ATKMB are on 40 points but desperately need a point to ensure ACL berth as they have already lost the reverse fixture 0-1.
Odisha played better football in the opening 10 minutes but conceding the lead proved to be Mumbai’s wake-up call as the floodgates opened right after the penalty. It took Mumbai only four minutes after the Odisha goal to draw parity through Ogbeche’s flying header off a Jahouh free-kick from right.
Mumbai continued to press hard to take the lead but they had to wait till 38 minutes when Bipin scored following a failed clearance by Odisha centre-back Jacob Tratt.
Then before half-time itself, Mumbai were 4-1 up with back-to-back goals as Odisha defenders stood like bowling pins. First, Ogbeche scored his second of the match with another unmarked header off a Jahouh free-kick from left at second post while Goddard scored with a brilliant left-footer from right of the area which shook the top left corner of the net.
The English-born Japanese winger had four-five men closing in on him but gave the Odisha players absolutely no chance and time with a precision strike which could have easily beaten worldclass goalkeepers any day.
Mumbai looked content with their lead after the breather and were understandably trying to save some energy and legs ahead of their match against ATKMB. However, that didn’t deter them from scoring another two despite missing a couple of chances, including one from the spot by Jahouh.
Bipin brought his second of the night two minutes into the second half following an assist by Ogbeche and was again rewarded for his opportunistic instinct as he brought his hat-trick by tapping in from close range when Arshdeep’s block of a long-ranger shot from Rowllin Borges fell to him near the right post.
