IMPHAL: 21–year- old Ningombam Prem, who makes waves after he designed ‘Iron Man’ suit from stationary and electronic waste, is now eying to become a mechanical inventor after industrialist Anand Mahindra assured help for his whole career.
Hailing from Heirok in Manipur’s Thoubal district, about 32 Km from Imphal, Prem has made seven robot suits, including battery-powered Iron Man’s helmet and arms, and his video was shared by a news portal and re shared by Anand Mahindra, drawing heaps of praises and appreciations all over in the social media.
“I am awestruck & inspired by Prem’s ambition & skills that have flowered despite- not because of – his circumstances. Many of us from privileged backgrounds never appreciated enough the resources we were given. But Prem uses scrap material & basic tools to shape his creations” Mahindra tweeted.
In another tweet, Anand said Mahindra Group’s Chief Design Officer will mentor the career of Prem and that his siblings will get their whole education.
“A few days back, representatives of Mahindra Groups had visited my poor family and asked about myself, my works and family background. My mother, who runs a small tea outlet, to augment the family, also narrated our humble living,” a soft-spoken Prem told this reporter on Saturday.
Second eldest of four siblings, Prem has just completed his graduation in fine arts at Imphal Art College.
“As I took science in my standard XII, I want to study engineering and according to the Mahindra team, a good engineering college would be chosen by them for me,” he said.
“I didn’t believe that I would study engineering because of our poor family income. Before Mahindra people visited us, I thought my life would confine here doing petty jobs. I really thank Sir Anand Mahindra for extending such a big and unbelievable opportunity to mentor me and sponsoring education of my siblings,” Prem said.
“I will work hard to become a mechanical inventor and bring fame for the country and the state,” he added.
Prem’s mother Ningombam Rasheshori is happier than him as she said such opportunity will bring down the big burden to augment her family and raise her children.
“This is something like a god-gifted opportunity. My happiness knew no bounds,” she said, while thanking Anand Mahindra from her heart.
Prem said he began making electronic items like mini fan using motor when he was studying in class III with the help of his local elders.
“Since then, I designed many items from my own ideas. Besides, robot suits , I also made automated pollution control mask and a mini refrigerator,” said Prem who is a big fan of Marvel star Robert Dowey Junior, who plays Iron Man.
The robot suits, including electronic helmets , are all made out of paper, cardboard , steel-colored chocolate covers, and most of these materials were collected from his uncle’s grocery shop, Prem said, adding that he used old batteries and wires, thread and motor for the electronic back up.
