Manchester City in no hurry to replace Sergio Aguero | Football News – Times of India

PANAJI: Manchester City have been linked with several big names who could step into the boots of Sergio Aguero but the club believes finding a replacement for their leading man would be almost impossible.
In recent days, City have been linked with Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, while talk of Lionel Messi making a move to the Etihad won’t go away, until he signs a new contract at Barcelona.
This season, Pep Guardiola has shown City can still be effective without Aguero and the Premier League champions are in no hurry to sign a replacement.
“Replacing Sergio is a very, very difficult task, if not impossible,” Omar Berrada, chief football operations officer at City Football Group (CFG), told select journalists from India during an online interaction on Wednesday. “His performances and contribution to the team since he joined us have been phenomenal. Arguably, he’s the best striker in the history of the Premier League, if you consider minutes played and goals scored. He’ll be sorely missed and almost impossible to replace.”
Berrada said the club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain and Guardiola would try to find the “best possible solution” and find someone who can contribute to the vacant striking position.
“The fortunate thing is that we are in a really good position where we will only make a transfer and go for a player, if it makes sense for us. If it’s absolutely within the framework of what we want to do.
“If not, then as you have seen, Pep has the capacity to adapt the team tactically. If we find the right opportunity, we will go for it. If not, we are in a comfortable situation,” said Berrada.
Aguero, who joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has been among the best with 20-plus goals for five consecutive years (2015 to 2019). His 12 hat-tricks in the Premier League is also a record.
One name that keeps getting linked to City is Messi. The Barcelona star’s contract ends this season, and given his proximity to Guardiola and what they achieved together in the past, the Etihad seems to be the most likely destination, if the Argentinian great decides to bid goodbye to Camp Nou.
“We are focused on our squad. When the season ends on Saturday evening, we will sit down with the people responsible for the football side and decide what we want to do with the transfer window,” said Berrada, asked specifically if the club continues to have Messi in their sights.
City won the Premier League and League Cup this season and have a chance of winning a treble on Saturday when they clash against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final.
